Kittens are at risk for parasite infection. Their body is still weak and fragile, which means it cannot properly resist various diseases.

To protect your baby, use Stronghold drops. This is an effective means of combating fleas and helminths, which is absolutely safe for animals and people. In the article we will tell you more about it and its features.

Description

An antiparasitic drug in the form of drops on the withers is produced by Zoetis. It is suitable for both treatment and prevention of infection by external and internal parasites.

"Stronghold" is one of the popular drugs  against parasites. It contains only one active ingredient – selamectin. The package contains three pipettes containing yellowish or colorless liquid. One pipette is intended for single use and cannot be stored once opened.

Indications for use

They are recommended for use for prevention:

  • helminthiasis, including nematode, toxocariasis and hookworm;
  • fleas, lice and lice;
  • sarcoptic mange and otodectosis;
  • flea allergic dermatitis, etc. (as part of complex therapy).

How the drug works

Selamectin destroys adult helminths (except for heartworms - only larvae), reduces the number of their larvae and eggs in the animal’s blood and prevents further transmission and spread.

The mode of action is identical for external parasites. Selamectin increases the permeability of their membranes to chlorine ions. A sharp increase in their number leads to a disruption of the parasite’s  nerve endings. It is no longer able to move and quickly dies.

Selamectin acts only on those nerve fibers that are located in the central nervous system. If you exceed the dosage, then in this case you can cause serious harm to the health of your pet, but otherwise the substance is safe for it.

The active substance belongs to the group of moderate toxicity, and if dosages are observed, it is well tolerated by children and pets weighing up to 2.5 kg.

After application to the skin, the drug is absorbed within 30 minutes. After 2 hours you can already bathe your pet. After this, the effect of the drops lasts for a month.

How to use Stronghold drops

Be sure to consult with your veterinarian before using them, and also read the instructions included in the box with the drug. When purchasing it, pay attention to the following:

  • Expiration date: it is indicated on the packaging itself and also on each pipette separately.
  • Type of medicine: what the pipettes look like, the liquid in them and the packaging itself.

How to apply:

  • One pipette can be used only 1 time.
  • To open the pipette, press the cap to pierce its spout.
  • Then remove the cap and spread the fur on the withers of the animal. Keep in mind that you need to apply drops to undamaged, clean and dry skin.
  • Squeeze out the contents.
  • Dispose of the used pipette.
  • Do not iron the place of application, exclude contact with other animals and children for 2 hours. After 2 hours, the animal can be washed with shampoo.
  • Make sure that the kitten does not try to lick the product off and does not rub its back against any surface. As a precaution, you can put a collar on the kitten.

After curing a cat from fleas, you need to thoroughly wash the floors and all surfaces with a special product, as well as wash all the things the cat regularly comes in contact with. After all, flea eggs can remain everywhere.

Do not forget to treat other animals in the house, if there are any. One accidental contact is enough to infect other pets.

Please note that even if the kitten has both fleas and worms, do not exceed the dosage recommended by the veterinarian.

If you have hypersensitivity to the components in the composition of the drug, avoid direct contact with it. You can apply drops while wearing gloves or ask someone from your family. In any case, do not involve children in the treatment process.

If you are allergic to the drug or accidentally swallow the contents, immediately contact a medical facility along with the instructions and packaging of the drug itself.

If you skip the medication for a day, do not double the dose next time, but give the usual one.

Recommended age for use

It can be used for kittens from the age of 6 weeks. If the pets are smaller, then the advice of a veterinarian will be needed here, since the dosage should be different, and the risks are greater.

Recommended dosage for kittens

For ease of use, each pipette has a different cap color. It shows the amount of substance inside. For kittens, puppies and adult pets weighing up to 2.5 kg, choose one pipette with a purple lid. She has a 6% solution inside, and the dose of selamectin is 15 mg. The volume of the pipette is 0.25 ml.

For the prevention or treatment of flea infestation, a single application of a pipette per month is sufficient. Fleas, their larvae and eggs die in the next 24 hours, and the drug itself will protect the animal for 30 days. During the activity of these parasites, regular treatment is required, even if the kitten does not leave the apartment. Fleas jump high and are able to enter multi-storey buildings, even apartments on the upper floors.

For the treatment of worms, the dosage recommendations are the same. To prevent infection with dirofilariasis, follow the treatment regimen prescribed by the doctor. This is a dangerous disease that can cause death in an animal.

Mosquitoes are carriers of dirofilariae, so make sure that the kitten lives in a room that they cannot get into. In summer, you can install grids on windows.

If you are moving to a region with a lot of mosquitoes, carry out the first treatment a month before the insect activity season. Treat the kitten monthly, with the last treatment taking place a month after the end of the season.
